UK Reference Biofoundry

The UK Reference Biofoundry is run by the National Physical Laboratory — the UK's National Metrology Institute — and brings measurement science to engineering biology. It supports high-throughput biological design and prototyping while providing the standards, reference materials and analytical methods needed for reliable data and improved commercialisation success.

Applying specific metrology and standards expertise, the NPL facility complements activities across the UK's biofoundry network, focusing on the measurement challenges underpinning reliable, scalable synthetic biology. The facility provides specialist infrastructure to early-stage innovators, SMEs and industry partners, supporting innovation and its translation through improved measurement and reproducibility of engineered biological systems.
