The Manchester Biofoundry

About

The Manchester Biofoundry — formerly SYNBIOCHEM — is a UK and European Centre of Excellence for synthetic biology. It harnesses synthetic biology to access bioderived chemicals and (non-)natural products, opening greener, more sustainable manufacturing processes.

Its highly integrated, interdisciplinary platform is built for the full engineering-biology workflow — from enzyme engineering and DNA pathway assembly to strain engineering — unlocking new biological routes to natural and non-natural compounds. Hosted by the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, it pairs automated platforms with analytical facilities for engineering biology.

Focus areas

  • Enzyme engineering
  • DNA pathway assembly
  • Strain engineering
  • Bioderived chemicals
  • Sustainable manufacturing
